...and I'd do it Allagan.

A Researcher Reborn

Shortly after the Calamity, Epsilon stumbled out of the deep Sagolii and into Byregot's Strike, gravely injured, raving about impossible visions, and remembering nothing but his own name. Since then he has become a preeminent scholar of history, magic, and technology, as well as a successful adventurer in his own right, but is still driven by the mystery of his origins.

Applied Aetherology

Alchemy, arcanima, conjury, machinistry, thaumaturgy… Epsilon has a preternatural knack for all of them -- so long as he is researching or building something. He is also a clockwork expert, which is to say an expert in Alexandrian and Allagan clockworks, and certainly not an expert constructed of Alexandrian clockwork. Ahem.

Crimson Walker

Trained by Ala Mhigan refugees in Thanalan, Epsilon fights (and heals) using a fusion of red magic and traditional Rhalgrite chakra manipulation. However, he has no taste for violence and no interest in convincing others that he does. He does not shy from combat when his hand is forced, but, "I'm only going to inflict the minimum pain upon you necessary to achieve my goals," is a worthless threat.

Roleplaying Hooks

  • Despite a truly terrible grasp of the basic elements of social interaction, Epsilon is almost off-puttingly excited about human contact. The more emotional it is, the less of it he understands, and the more fascinated he becomes as a result.

  • Whether his journeys take him to the furthest tracks of the Azim Steppe or the deepest trenches of the Tempest, Epsilon always seems to return to the Dravanian Hinterlands, where he continues a lifelong study of Alexander and the Sharlayan remnant. He as often aids its guardians as he runs afoul of them, be they Illuminati, Sharlayan, or of Idyllshire.

  • Shortly after his awakening at Byregot's Strike, Epsilon and some of the Sons of Saint Coinach were captured by Amal'jaa raiders. Epsilon proved impossible for Ifrit to temper, and was spared destruction only by the timely, albeit unintentional, intervention of the monk Zaius Rhal'seer, who went on to train Epsilon in pugilism. Philosophical differences over the sanctity of life eventually forced the two men to part ways.

  • After years of pursuing his studies independently, Epsilon joined the faculty of the Collegia Arcanum upon encountering some of its members while researching the Resonance phenomenon and process in Ala Mhigo. He was recognized as a professor of practice, and established an aetherology laboratory in a subbasement of their primary campus at 45 Southeast Subdivision, 12th Ward, Mist.

  • Although the Collegia has since dissolved, Epsilon's laboratory and research persist deep beneath the Light's Path Boarding House at that address, with the blessing of the new management.

  • Epsilon himself retains an apartment and substantial personal library at 1-13 Sultana's Breath, 20th Ward, The Goblet.

  • He can often be found exploring the deeper corners of Hydaelyn and the First alongside the free company Trivial Heresies, with whom he shares a cursed bond; the less said about which the better.

  • Thanks to his Echo, items that Epsilon synthesizes using the aether of a living creature retain something of the donor in them. How exactly this manifests depends on the donor, the item itself, and the item's user.

A Scarlet Scholar

But for his predilection for ostentatious red hats, Epsilon does not stand out from the crowd; a pallid, long-limbed elezen of middle age, average height and build, neither handsome nor homely, dressed as an academic or perhaps a Disciple of Magic. He tends to dress in high-collared longcoats, in subdued shades of blue, and seems to fancy brass fittings. He carries himself with the easy confidence of a martial artist.Under the brim of the hat and behind the collar, Epsilon's face is scarred by old wounds, including a faint webwork of blue veins on the right side, where he was once dealt a crushing blow, and what appear to be a series of well-disguised metal pins just below his hairline. The hats and collars seem to be a defensive consideration rather than one of vanity, however -- he wears his mid-length grey hair swept back from his face, seemingly unconcerned by the marks upon his face. His gaze flits between objects and people in his field of vision almost as though he is scanning his surroundings.

  • Roleplay Style:

  • I am always looking for IC conversation, in or out of game.

  • I approach plotty event roleplay with suspicion; it often seems to lead to drama. Unscripted moments of genuine interaction are always preferred.

  • Mostly I just like to engage on slice-of-adventurer-life stuff that comes with being a Disciple in Eorzea. I like to discuss how current affairs (up to the previous patch) affect the people like Epsilon who aren’t directly involved in the events of the Main Story Quest.

  • My position on PCs can be summed up as, "You can be no Warrior of Light, or a Warrior of Light, but not the Warrior of Light." Everyone has a right to be exceptional (or not, as they choose). Tell your own story!

  • I try to stay canonical (MSQ notwithstanding), but in the name of keeping things fun, I define that pretty broadly, and include all of FFXIV and the rest of Final Fantasy, as well, as the developers seem to.

  • I think you pay a lot of money to play this game, and should be entitled to roleplay in any zone and as any job and level combination to which you have access.

  • If you think the rules of the setting shouldn't allow this, I respect your choice -- let's agree to not rub it in each other's faces, and I'm sure we can still get along IC and OOC. It's just a game.

  • When I see roleplayers trying to control others with their interpretation of "lore," I dismiss them out of hand, just as I would any gatekeeper. When even the designers of the game disagree with you about the importance of their story to roleplay, you are on pretty shaky ground.
